There are many different terms when it comes to learning about prose terminology. The most common ones are puns, jargon, metaphors, similies, and many others.

Literary Devices

Colloquialism

Colloquialism is when a word or phrase is used in an informal way. Usually used in casual conversation. For example in the phrase" Go bananas" the word Bananas means crazy and is often used in an informal way.

Parallelism

Parallelism happens when related words, phrases, or clauses in a sentence or paragraph use the same grammatical structure. Ex. “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”

Euphemism

Euphemism happens whenever something unpleasant or embarrassing is being discussed, a milder or indirect expression is substituted for a harsh or blunt one.

Ex. “Passed away” instead of “died” “

Let go” instead of “fired”

Idioms

Idioms are a set of words whose meaning cannot be deduced solely from their individual meanings. Ex. "its raining cats and dogs", " This costs a arm and leg"

Puns

When a word is used in a way that highlights "two or more of its meanings or the meaning of another word with a similar sound", it usually is ironic in tone and intended to be humorous. Ex. "It's raining cats and dogs, so don't step in a poodle!"
