Connotation is the emotional attachment behind a word, for example the word blue as a definition is just the colour blue, but a connotation of the word blue would be gloomy or sad which has a negative connotation
Denotation is the dictionary definition of the word being used, meaning that emotional attachment is not present when using the word. For example, the denotation of the word fat is having an excess amount of flesh which has no positive or negative connotation.
